Judge Orders Trump Administration to Remove Citizenship Question from 2020 Census

Last week, a federal judge ordered the Trump Administration to stop plans to include the citizenship question. Judge Furman provided a detailed decision “…for good reasons…The integrity of the census is a matter of national importance.” His decision outlined several key concerns and the legal standing on which he based his decision:

  • Secretary Ross’s decision was not in accordance with the law, including a requirement that the bureau utilize existing administrative data first, before collecting additional information. Data on citizenship is already available through other sources.
  • Secretary Ross’s decision was arbitrary and sudden – the justifications given by the Agency contradicted the evidence that was before the agency and failed to consider important aspects of the problem, failed to justify departures from existing guidelines and practice.
  • Including the citizenship question would cause “Injury in Fact” causing damage such as diminished representation, loss of funding, loss of accuracy of data, diversion of resources and loss of privacy.

Thank you to the members of The Children’s Movement who voiced your concerns and submitted comments opposing the question. The Trump Administration has already filed an appeal – stay tuned on this important issue.

Governor’s budget includes support for the 2020 Census

Governor Newsom included $54 million in his recently released state budget to support the 2020 Census. It is critical that there is adequate funding for Community Based Organization (CBO) outreach to ensure every person – especially every child – is counted.

The state RFP for statewide and regional CBO’s organizations interested in supporting Census education and outreach activities have been released with a deadline of February 15. Please take a look to see if it is a fit for your organization.
