The CA Collaborative on Social Emotional Foundations for Early Learning (CA CSEFEL) Teaching Pyramid is an excellent professional development approach to support healthy social-emotional skills while decreasing challenging behavior. The CA CSEFEL Teaching Pyramid is one of the professional development pathways for the QRIS and ties together many of the quality practices into a single framework.

For the past four years, WestEd has been working in Race to the Top-Early Learning Challenge communities to provide this framework through comprehensive professional development and building local capacity by authorizing trainers and coaches. Authorization to become a CA CSEFEL Teaching Pyramid Trainer or Coach is typically a two-year (two-phase) apprenticeship process, done in conjunction with CA CSEFEL Teaching Pyramid module training in a community. There continues to be a need for more coaches as well as trainers in implementing counties as well as interest in bringing the approach to new areas. This year there is a unique opportunity to jump start the authorization process and plan for future professional development needs.

WestEd, through a contract with the Early Education and Support Division of the California Department of Education, will be offering the Phase 1 training for coaches and training for trainers in two separate institutes with fellowships to cover much of the cost. Please see the attached information sheet an announcement for the applications

  1. Coaching Institute: For those with coaching experience (such as QRIS coaches, PITC Partners for Quality coaches, or similar professionals) a four day institute is offered in San Diego February 27-March 2, 2016.
  2. New Trainer Institute: For individuals interested in providing training on the CA CSEFEL Teaching Pyramid for Preschool or for Infants and Toddlers in Fairfield on June 21-23, 2017.

Additionally, there will be an institute for individuals who are already authorized as CA CSEFEL Teaching Pyramid for Preschool Trainers to expand their authorization to include the CA CSEFEL Teaching Pyramid for Infants & Toddlers in Fairfield June 19-21, 2017.

There are limited fellowships available to cover the cost of the hotel, some meals, materials during the Institute. A registration fee of $125 and travel costs are the responsibility of the participant. Please have interested individuals apply through the EventBrite links in the flyers.

On Wednesday, December 14 at 3 pm, a Webinar was held to discuss what is needed to support the individuals completing Phase 1 through these institutes to complete Phase 2 and work toward authorization. The link below provides Trainer & Coaching Institute resources on one Web page. The Web page includes a recording of the December 14 Webinar, Questions & Answers, as well as the flyers and links to the application.
